The testimony of a Dominican preacher in the 15th century tells us the devotion of the Rosary was given to Saint Dominic by the Blessed Virgin Mother during an apparition he received of her in 1214 A.D. Although there’s no surviving documentation of this event, nor surviving testimony of St. Dominic, we know that the Church believed it to be a true account, given the incredible fruit mendicant preachers bore when spreading the rosary to those they converted. It became so important to the spiritual life of Catholics that Pope Pius V issued a decree in 1569 officially recognizing the devotion.
